Sleep Lab Services

The OSU Medical Center (OSUMC) Sleep Lab provides optimum assistance to physicians and restorative health needs for patients in a safe and comfortable environment.

Services by the OSUMC Sleep Lab include treatment for patients for obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, periodic limb movement disorders and other sleep disorder associated illnesses. Several of the conditions treated in the sleep lab are:

  • Sleep apnea: a breathing disorder characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep.
  • Central sleep apnea: occurs when the brain fails to send the appropriate signals to the breathing muscles to initiate respirations.
  • Obstructive sleep apnea: occurs when airflow cannot flow into or out of the person's nose or mouth even though they are attempting to breathe.
  • Periodic limb movements: interfere with a good night's sleep because one's legs are "jerking" every 20 to 40 seconds throughout the night.
  • Restless leg syndrome: affects people with crawling sensations in their legs when they lie down to go to sleep.
  • Narcolepsy: a condition where people fall asleep unexpectedly periodically throughout the day.
  • Chronic insomnia: affects people who are unable to fall asleep at night.
  • Sleepwalking: can be a sign of an emotional or physical problem that needs treatment.
  • Body clock disorder: occurs when an individual's internal time clock is not synchronized with the rest of the world.
  • Changing sleep patterns: as people age, they sleep more lightly at night and wake earlier in the morning.

In addition to treatment for sleep disorders, the OSUMC Sleep Lab is fully equipped to perform professional sleep studies in two bedroom settings complete with queen-size beds and armoires. These studies are performed while the patient sleeps and all technicians are trained in the performance of all polysomnography testing and infection control.
